What if, instead of planning what we want 5 or 10 years down the line, we focus on what we want one year from now? This is the question that entrepreneur Hailey Thomas has built her system of career coaching around. This week, Hailey interviews Nicola Brown, founder of Kokoro, about her science-backed, tool-oriented approach to growing and thriving in both health and business.

The Recipe for Thriving ft. Nicola Brown

Considering the inside and the outside

In a previous episode, Hailey discussed the importance of treating clarity as a practice. As it turns out, Nicola views thriving as a practice as well. To show up in the right ways in the future, we have to take responsibility for our ability to thrive here and now. Nicola’s business is centered around wellness, making Kokoro the perfect place to learn how to improve your inner self so that you can outwardly thrive.

“If our internal worlds are well, we are able to show up holistically in society and be amazing.”

Practicing self-compassion

Do you look back on past mistakes and wonder why you didn’t do better? For many of Nicola’s clients, this is a common way that they tear themselves down and hold themselves back. Learning and growing requires self-compassion and self-confidence. The person you were in the past should not be criticized for the things they had yet to learn.

“When you don’t know better, you can’t do better, because you don’t know how. So when you know how, you can’t automatically go back in time and beat yourself up for it.”

Getting help along the way

We do not need the same tools to get where we need to be, but that doesn’t mean that we have to do it alone. When you take responsibility for your ability to thrive, you should also focus on letting in others that can help and support you along the way. This is why Nicola focuses so much of her business around guiding others to create their own journey, providing tools to teach others how to thrive.

“We’re on individual journeys in a collective experience.”

Making your own choices

When you accept help from others, make sure you are still embarking on your own quests and following your own thoughts. Nicola uses journaling as the perfect example of this. There is no right way to journal your thoughts, only the way that works for you personally. Don’t fall victim to feeling like you have to follow trends or comply with what everyone else is doing.

“Don’t get caught up in how other people have done it. Try a thing and see if that thing works for you.”
