What if, instead of planning what we want 5 or 10 years down the line, we focus on what we want one year from now? This is the question that entrepreneur Hailey Thomas has built her system of career coaching around. This week, Hailey outlines the 5 difficult emotions that her clients most often experience during their journey towards goal achievement and how to cope with each one on your own path to success.

Vulnerability

Working towards your goal can make you feel incredibly vulnerable to attack or criticism. As the statements, you’re making become more concrete and you push towards promoting certain services or products, you might find yourself feeling doubtful about opening yourself up.

“Your brain finds it very scary to be very specific with your offer and very specific with your opinion and your stance on things.”

Grief

The journey towards achieving a goal challenges us to become someone new. While this is incredibly liberating, it can also leave us mourning who we once were. Your past self got you to where you needed to be, and it’s okay if it’s painful to say goodbye to her as you push forwards.

“There is a grief that happens because you’re not the person you were anymore.”

Exhaustion

Hard work takes its toll both physically and mentally, especially when you’re in the middle of your goal marathon. As you keep pushing towards the finish line, you’ll find that the struggle to stay committed and trust the process can be incredibly draining and tiring.

“It can wear you out if you’re not used to making these decisions because they’re not your default decisions.”

Loneliness

We get the most support at the beginning and end of our goal journey, while the middle stretch is often just us working hard on our own. This can make you feel lonely and isolated, and those feelings can become even more prominent when you’re doing something no one else has done.

“When you really start to be innovative and sing your own song and go your own way, it comes up again and it’s a painful emotion. No one likes to really feel lonely.”

Disappointment

If you’re stepping outside your comfort zone in any way, you’re opening yourself up to disappointment. Many of us associate disappointment with failure and we’ll go through great lengths to avoid it, which can deeply harm the progress we’re trying to make towards our goals.

“Such a significant driver of what we do or what we don’t do is trying to avoid disappointment.”
